Buying Or Selling a Vehicle – Get a Proper Bill of Sale

A proper bill of sale is essential when buying or selling a vehicle. Take the time and care to have it properly – either as a seller consummating a deal or as a buyer who should insist on a proper and full bill of sale. How could it be otherwise?

For a seller a bill of sale “closes” or consummates the deal. It’s a don deal. Everything is spelled out that it is agreed to. To a buyer a bill of sale is essential either for licensing the car, truck or S.U.V. If a safety certificate is required in the state or province of registration then a proper and full bill of sale is required. If financing is involved – the bank, finance company or credit union require full and proper documentation for the financing arrangements and documentation. If the vehicle is be exported say from the U.S. to Canada then both the US and Canadian border authorities are very firm and even sticklers that “paperwork” be full, comprehensive and complete. Lastly when the buyer resells the car or is involved in an insurance claim then again proper paperwork and bill of sale is essential and necessary.

The summary is it behooves both the buyer and seller of a vehicle to take the time, effort and attention to fully complete a proper bill of sale.

It may seem tedious and a long task to do. However just imagine all the wasted time and effort that will be involved in the present and future to the present and future owners of the automotive product without comprehensive documentation in order.

A bill of sale is a legal document. As such it should be written out with the same care that would be spent writing a check or a bill of sale for a property or home. In this day and age of computerization commercial bill of sales are usually routinely prepared with assistance of a template in a computer program, then printed on paper and as well stored both electronically on the computer hard drive and often as a hard copy on paper as a backup or convenience. However if it is a private sale or the seller is not familiar with or have a computer handy then a written copy – either hand written, typed or on a pre-printed commercial form can be used. Just as an exam or test in school neatness and attention to detail are the first orders.

With a proper bill of sale the seller can more easily close the deal. Next in line is usually financing of the vehicle. If the financing falls through due to incomplete or unclear paperwork then all the previous efforts and energy spent in the auto sales process are for naught. With a complete, full and comprehensive bill of sale then it’s a one, two three easy and sequential flow for the finance company to process and approve the financing request or know on the spot what additional information or documentation is needed to complete the task.

For the auto buyer it all stands as reassurance that everything is right, proper and correct with their purchase. Everything is above board, on paper, with no snags or problems along the way.

People who go to purchase a new vehicle usually do so because of the difficulties they are having with their current or previous vehicle. By having the bill of sale completed in an orderly, neat and effortless process it makes life easy for the buyer and seller. Take the extra time and effort as an automotive vehicle seller to complete the bill of sale properly. As an automotive buyer or purchaser take the time to insist and verify that the bill of sale that your receive is full and complete.
