Dealing with Used Car Paperwork After Selling A Car

Here is how I handle the used car paperwork after I have sold a car. Well, its actually part of the actual used car deal because some of this happens at the end of the deal. As far as finalizing a car deal, I prefer cash and never accept a personal check. With cash – you know the deal is done and you know you don’t need to hassle with it anymore.

If its an expensive car or truck, or maybe they want to buy it through their business, then I might accept a cashiers check. However, I’m a trusting soul, but if I REALLY felt there was something weird about the car buyer, or it was a fairly expensive used car I was selling, then I would have them to come with me to the bank BEFORE I cut loose with the car, the keys, and the title.

Its important to put on the ‘Bill Of Sale’ the following…

PLEASE NOTE: I am not, I can not, and I will not give legal advice here because I’m not an attorney. That means you are on your own here. However, this is what has always worked for me as far as dealing with used car paperwork when I have sold a car.

“Buyer understands that this car is being sold on an “AS IS” basis only. Seller will not be responsible for any future repairs. This sale is final.”

Then I would have the car buyer sign and date the Bill Of Sale and give them a copy. By doing that you have eliminated all the potential hassle of having the person come back to you wanting to return the car or wanting you to pay for some repair.

Please don’t take what I just said as the only way to do something. Perhaps you live in an area of the world where you are responsible for a used car even AFTER you sell a car for a period of time (and how scary would that be?!). So check this out for yourself with whatever government agency handles the paperwork when you sell a car.

Offhand I don’t know of anything. Just Google it and you should find something or go to a legal site that has forms. Or you could call a stationary store because sometimes they have standardized forms.
